SUMMARY:DCAMM Seminar - Localization of plastic flow leading to ductile failure
DESCRIPTION:
A DCAMM seminar will be presented by
\n
Assistant Professor Cihan Tekoğlu
\n

\n
Department of Mechanical Engineering,
\nTOBB University of Economics and Technology,
\n
Söğütözü, Ankara, Turkey
\n

\n
\n
Abstract:
\n
\n Two modes of plastic flow localization commonly occur in the ductile fracture of structural metals undergoing damage and failure by the mechanism involving void nucleation, growth and coalescence. The first mode consists of a macroscopic localization, usually linked to the softening effect of void nucleation and growth, in either a normal band or a shear band where the thickness of the band is com- parable to void spacing. The second mode is coalescence with plastic strain localizing to the ligaments between voids by an internal necking process. In this presentation, first, recently developed micromechanics based void coalescence criteria will be reviewed. Then, the question that whether macroscopic localization occurs prior to void coalescence or whether the two occur simultaneously will be addressed.
\n
Danish pastry, coffee and tea will be served 15 minutes before the seminar starts.
\n
\nAll interested persons are invited
